Volume defaults to mute?

My volume has decided to default back to mute after each use. Using Win2000 right now with the standard media player. Anyone experienced this?

Dumb question but which volume defaults back to mute? Windows media player? Or is it the volume within Windows itself?

I can't say I've heard of either problem but more info would make searching easier.
