ms office problem?

using windows and office xp. im trying to open an excel email attachment and i get an error with a yellow triangle and exclamation point saying that .xls file format is not valid. this has happened with other attachments also. is something wrong with my office? it has worked before. help

What happens if you download the attachment and try to open it?

Do you run antivirus software that also provides email protection? If so, the AV program may render attachments unable to open (would prevent a script/trojan, etc. from running if opened) until you do a "save as.." and are prompted to acknowledge the safety of the file (I think that's the same direction Steve is headed).
