How do you set up a restore point when windows let's you press F8 before it actually starts loading and then it says "Restore to a Point" or something similar? THanks.

(XP) Not sure if this will assist---
Go into system tools and select "system restore"
its a simple read of the screen from that point...

dont you have to be able to boot windows, at least safe mode, to use system restore? or can it be done from the recovery console ?

What I think he is wanting to say is that Windows XP while loading and you press F8 in the menu you can restore windows to a point that has been created. At least thats what I understood about his question. If so then the answer is simple. You will have to create a restore point while using Windows and after you can load that restore point and 'go back' in time to that point that you created. This you can do while using Windows and pressing F8 in the boot and enter the menu and restore it through there. Please correct me if I am wrong.

yeah, making the restore points in windows is easy enough...im trying to think of a restore thing on the boot menu??

The only thing I can think of is if he's talking about "scanreg /restore" but with that windows is making the restore points automatically each time you boot.

Maybe he is talking about "last known good configuration"??

That is just restoring the registry to the last good bootup...like if you do a reg hack and then it wont boot...you can use "last known good" to turn the registry back to the last good copy.

On my inspiron XP home lappy I only see "last known good"

AFAIK system restore is a windows only thing...not in the boot menu

Last known good configuration restores twindows to the last restore point in your system that BOOTED successfully AFTER it was made.

It only does the last good one because, theorectically, if you wanted one even farther back, you could restore to one that can at least boot, then restore to the one you want.

No, its not in the boot menu, its in the menu that Windows XP itself has when you press F8 before Windows loads. And there I think you have an option telling you if you want to restore to a point so you restore Windows without booting in it. Thats what I think at least
