exactly what is overclocking

okay just for the heck of it, lets pretend that I know nothing about CPU's (i mean it, drop the assumptions); could someone please explain overclocking to me. simply please!

Follow Martoch's link, there to find out a ton about it.

Conceptually, though, it's the process of making your CPU run faster than the speed that it was initially labeled as and/or designed to run at. The processor is meant to run at a certain clock speed. If you can make it go faster than that clock speed you are, by definition overclocking it.

Looked at another way, it's a simple and inexpensive way to get your computer to do double duty as a marshmallow roaster

done with reading a couple of these. So tell me exactly how far can an AMD athlon XP 2000+ be pushed? Or is each individual
processor specific?

yes, each processor can be o/ced by a different amount, and amd are usually more amenable to o/cing than intel.
