Well, the P-rating of the Athlon XP chips is supposed to equate to what sort of speed an older Thunderbird core Athlon would need to reach in order to perform similiarly to the Athlon XP. The P-rating system is usually (not always) a good indicator of performance as compared to a P4, as well.
Basically, with the 2600+, you're getting a chip that performs very similiarly to the P4 2.6, depending on the platform the chip is on. This all really depends on a couple of factors:
1. How much money do you want to spend on this system.
2. What other components are you looking at for this system.
3. What do you need this system for? Are you going to be doing some pretty intense gaming? Or are you going to be doing media encoding or is this going to be a basic 'net box?
