help with amd athlon xp (vs p4)

Hi, im debating on whether to get an AMD Athlon xp mb+cpu or a P4. I was just wondering what is an Athlon 2600 (with 333mhz fsb) in terms of P4 and Ghz- (is the athlon like 1.5 ghz or a 2.6 ghz?). Thanks.

Well, the P-rating of the Athlon XP chips is supposed to equate to what sort of speed an older Thunderbird core Athlon would need to reach in order to perform similiarly to the Athlon XP. The P-rating system is usually (not always) a good indicator of performance as compared to a P4, as well.

Basically, with the 2600+, you're getting a chip that performs very similiarly to the P4 2.6, depending on the platform the chip is on. This all really depends on a couple of factors:

1. How much money do you want to spend on this system.

2. What other components are you looking at for this system.

3. What do you need this system for? Are you going to be doing some pretty intense gaming? Or are you going to be doing media encoding or is this going to be a basic 'net box?

VFM...bang fer buck...whatever u call it, amd is it. no it won't hold it's own against the top p4s but you're paying a fraction of the price. athlon boards are normally cheaper too and IMO u have a better choice of chipsets and onboard extra for less money.

dont bank on buying something upgradable cos 64-bit is most definitely on the way...

What mems you got on your p4? Will it work with the 2600?

now i use rdram, and the athlon will use ddr. Not a big problem thought. For the chip, mb and ram itll cost less than $200 all together. So it seems like its a pretty awesome deal, especially compared to what i can get for $200 in terms of a p4. But i was basically just wondering if a 2600 is pretty much equal to a p4 2.6. Thanks for the replies.

Since you've already considered the mems then go for the 2600. The advantage is the 166mhz fsb (333ddr).

By the way... who cares if it's comparable to p2.6

I would go for an Intel Pentium 4 over an AMD Athlon XP because the latest P4's are much better regarding performance, temperatures although they are more expensive. If you are in a budget then AMD is fine but if you want performance then Intel is the deal.
