Get Norton AV , AND ZoneAlarm
Nothing like running around the internet with your pants around your ankles!!
And DITCH I.E. too , run Mozilla ~ and keep outta the "free porn" , that will go a long ways to a system that's not whacked in two month's time. http://www.mozilla.org Robert

and of course your obligitory NAV .....
running msconfig might allow you to eliminate some start ups that aren't needed also.
Don't leave home without them !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Along with Ad-Aware, make sure you get Spybot. There are some spyware that Ad-Aware doesn't detect but Spybot does and vice versa.

I would go with Norton Anti virus, Zone Alarm, Spybot - Search and Destroy, and Ad-Aware. These software will have your computer safe and in good conditions. And make sure you get Service pack 1 (which I consider great, in my experiences) and the neccesarry patches.

I'd go with Dan's recommendations but I'd substitute Sygate for ZoneAlarm. I don't care for ZA much..
EDIT: I'd substitute Norton for AVG - I don't care much for Norton either..

Current in use for me:
NAV 2003, Ad-Aware 6.0 (for spywares), and sygate firewall.

Go Here and run its free online virus scanner to rule out virues.
