Talk do I need a smart UPS?

Thinking of buying an APC 1000VA smart UPS on ebay. Descriptions seem to suggest that this type is for network and mission critical purpose. Using a desktop PC with 350 watt p/s and 19in CRT monitor. I read where two members have advised against buying UPS PRO. Another has a UPS PRO and recommends purchasing the cable for automatic shutdown. Would like to know what's wrong with the UPS PRO, and if getting the APC smart is overbuying.

The pro works just fine with a single system....The SmartUPS allows for more detailed information/monitoring and in many cases can be used to control multiple system's shutdowns Sounds like to me the pro version would be just fine for you.

You might look at some of the links and info in this poll that was run a little while ago at XtremePcCentral.

Thanks for the info. It's been helpful. Conext model looks good but they don't seem to have user replaceable battery feature. APC looks like a good model.

The Conext does have a user replaceable battery...It's just not as straightforward as in the APC units so they just dont let it out

SMART means your power always comes from the battery, so you have power regulation at the same time.

PRO means there's a switching device inside that goes from direct power to battery, when you have power on, there is no regulation done. It's a simple battery backup that may not protect well against surges since the surge may have time to reach your PC before the switching device has the time to switch to the battery.
