the motherboard is an ecs p4vmm rev1. the cpu is a p4 2.4 @400mhz fsb. The OS windows XP home. The problem: windows runs fine but will not shut down. I think the problem is in some way related to xp's service pack. I've tried kill-win and it doesn't help. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Did you install SP 1 from the CD or download. I ordered the CD and have installed it on two computers without any casuaslties. Downloads that size , IMO, are quite risky and the CD is free except for shipping.
P.S. welcome, enjoy your stay.

Damn the torpedos, full speed ahead
try reinstall your OS again...theres a thread related to this and he fixed it by recovering its "shut-down"*.dat file. can't recall what was the file though.
This may sound really strange, but go into the bios, under Power Management and check the setting of "Soft-off by PWRBTN." If it's set to instant off, that might be the problem, try setting it to 4-second delay. I had the same symptoms with a system I built a year ago and setting the 4 second delay fixed the problem. It's supposed to have something to do with the system shutting down so fast that the hard drives don't have time to clear their caches.
