Burner Problems

This one has me totally stumped. I took my old burner (LiteOn 24X) out of my old machine and put it into the new one I built. Everything seems to be working fine (except for the power supply I had to replace in the first week) until I went to burn a data CD.

The software would run until it was about 40% written and then it would abort. Said it was an "undetermined recorder error". I tried the Windows XP burner and it also would not work. I got the "cannot finalize disk" message.

At this point, I decide it must be the burner going bad so I went and bought another one. This time a LiteOn 52X. Same thing happened. I can burn disk to disk but not a data disk.

Has anyone experienced this and have a possible solution?

Thanx

Is it possible that the CD media is of low quality, or otherwise causing the grief?

I have had great luck using Maxell media in my Lite-On 48x drive. (Burning 40x media at 48x worked flawlessly, in fact.) I know many of the 'cheap' CD media brands can really cause weird errors/results.

Secondly, you should make sure that your jumpers are set correctly. (If it is master, set the jumper to master. If slave, set to slave.)

I have also seen a case where the standard 40-wire IDE cable was replaced with an 80-wire IDE cable, and errors went away. (the 80-wire cable is typically used for Hard Drives.)

I have tried the disk that came with the new burner - no luck - tommorrow will get different ones and try that.

Thought maybe it was a network problem but won't burn out of shared folders either.

I'm pretty sure I'm running 80's now and the jumpers are set properly.

Problem solved - I had nVidia drivers and found out they are not compatible with XP - uninstalled and went with the Microsoft generic drivers - works fine now
