Help w/ BCM94306/HP w450 802.11g

Hello i am running a gateway 600ygr
with a linksys wrt54g network router
i got the software for my wireless adaptor from support.gateway.com
it works, however I get low signal for the wireless adapter when im in the same room with the router, 54mb/s.
below the router one floor down i still get low signal but 2mb/s
if i move away paralell to it throw two walls i loose signal completely
the router works fine my linksys wpc54g card picks up perfectly 2 stories down so it's not that.


I would appreciate comments and suggestion on fixing this problem
