Assign a hard drive letter (Win ME)

I have 20 GB of unpartitioned space on my C drive that I was planning to use for backup space. But if I partition it, I would like to assign it a drive letter other than D, so as not to mix up my CD drive letters.

Is there a way to do this in ME?

I tried this half-heartedly in 98 and never could get the hard drives to take any letter other than the one right after c: (or whatever was first available after c: ) Optical drives just took the first drive letter available after the hard drives.

Hopefully someone with more know-how than me will have a better answer.

Hmm I know in Win2k its easy
in Win9x I believe you're forced to take the next letter available.

I think even if you were to build 5 SMALL drives in the middle then delete the middle drives it would re-assign the last drive down a letter.

Partition magic may allow for it, but I can't say for sure.

This is the same conclusion I came to when I was trying it. Everything I looked up said I was stuck.

I moved to Win2k a couple weeks later.

Another thing to consider is if you create a second partion, It will be D:, but if you stick another drive on the other ide controller, that drive will assume D: and the second partiton on the first drive will become E:. AUTOMATICALLY

I thought if the second drive was a logical drive it would be "E."

Edit: Or is that only if it's a slave?

BTW, I don't believe it can be done wiit ME.

I tried the same thing in 9X and finaly just assigned my CD a higher drive letter so that subsequent changes had no effect.

Bill,

Right it would if you have a CD already using D. When I deal with win9x machines, one of the first things I do after the install is buimp the cd to G or higher.

That gives me an idea.

I have two ATAPI drives, a CD-RW and DVD, currently assigned E and F, respectively. I could bump the CD-RW to G without affecting applications, since all of them run off the DVD.
