problem OCing a 2.4c, it will run at 3.0 easy but only if ram is at 333, at lower clo
Hi
guys Im building a rig for a friend and I have a very strange problem when I try to OC it
its a P4 2.4C on a Asus P4P800 and with Kingston Value Ram dual pack @ 400mhz, stock hsf
ok I try to OC it and it will go over 3ghz, but the target is 3 so Im trying to get it running nice at 3, the problem is that at 3ghz the ram will only work in 333 mode, dunno why, if I set it to 400 prime will fail in a couple minutes
now at lower cpu speeds the ram will run at faster than spec speeds, currently the cpu is at 2.73 and the ram is at 228 (running 1:1 with the cpu), ran prime for hours and its all good
what do you guys think this could be ??
please let me know
Thank you
Dan

Not critizing but Kingston Value Ram seems a stange choice to make when you were planning to o/c. I would have picked a higher quality RAM. Kingston itself has RAM better suited for o/c. I too am using Kingston Value Ram and o/c but I have just accepted the compromises necessary. (I wasn't originally planning to o/c when I choose RAM)

Yeah. Value? That's the cheap stuff. It won't normally go too great over spec. Have you tried increasing the voltage?

3 things
one: it was budget machine
two: its not out of spec if its at 400 isnt it ? if I was going to run it 1:1 I would of got the most expensive stuff, but it was origianlly planned to go 5:4 and at 250fsb thats 200 for the ram and thats in spec
and three: did anyone even read my post ? at 2.7 cpu it will run at 1:1 at 460mhz ! thats out of spec and for value ram Id say thats pretty good (stock voltage)
and in the news, 2.55V fixed everything
Thanks
Dan

Just curious, but what's the default voltage for the RAM? Perhaps what was REALLY happening, is the PSU was having a hard time feeding everything at the increased speeds, and lowering the memory clock or the CPU speed got it to the point that it needed to finish a round of Prime. Usually, incomprehensible instabilities are caused by crappy PSU's, and not because of RAM or CPU or motherboards.
Your system sounds fine, by the way. Cheap RAM isn't necessarily a bad choice for systems, and Kingston stuff, regardless of the price-point it comes in at, is really very good. One aspect of any system, budget or otherwise, I wouldn't skimp on would be the power supply, though.
Try running a round or two of 3DMark and see what happens. Under that kind of load, your system might still be unstable.
