the windows defrag has always been a slo, ineeficient and lazy beast.. it does not normally do a FULL defrag and it has always been pig slow

check this pdf out for a good read on why to use 3rd party defrag tools...

think windows puts all the files at the front of the disk, don't know what download defrag you're talking about, but Norton's defrag puts most used programs up front and less used at the rear.

The windows defrag program doesn't defragment the MFT or the pagefile.

Personally I like and use Diskeeper. I believe the native xp defragger is diskeeper "lite".

Also got an email (spam) that version 8.0 is out. Version 7.0 workstation seems to work very well with all nt on ntfs.

I like Norton's (symantec) defrag in their Speed Disk utility, it gives you more control over the process... i.e. which programs are moved to the front.. to the end and which programs you don't want moved at all.

But if you have a spare HD and Ghost.... nah! that's too involved

ghost does not reorder files in any way...even if you are doing imaging from one disk to another...

for most people, the native defragger bundled w/your OS does an adequate job, even if it's a bit slow. the free defraggers may be a little bit faster...

if you've got money to spend, sure you can always buy a commercial package such as diskeeper or o&o defrag (which is what i use) but it's not an absolute 'necessity'.

give it a try.... check out the files on the distination disk when cloning a HD with ghost.... source drive lots of fragmented files... distination drive... all layed out in perfect order and not one fragmented file.
