Problem with Barton 2500 and Asus A7V8X-X shutting down in BIOS
Hi all, new to the board and having a problem with this machine. It's only about 4 hours old, just picked up today. Here's the specs and problems:

Asus A7V8X-X
Athlon Barton 2500 cpu
Infineon 512 PC3200 - 2 sticks
Asus GeForce Ti4200

The BIOS is only seeing the CPU as 1467mhz and I cannot make any changes before the darn thing shuts off. It's factory settings as is because as I've said it shuts completely off before I can save any settings.

Anything that I can do here? I can't even start the WinXP install before it shuts off. It's not running hot either, it has to be a setting somewhere. Possibly a jumper? The core voltage is 1.65 but I can't change the clock speed and I have the memory frequency set at AUTO.

Any help would be very appreciated. Thanks

Welcome to Techimo....

Are you sure you are not runnnig hot, looks like the system is autoprotecting itself...

It shutdown in a exact period of time or is a random time shutdown?

almost every single time I attempt to save changes and exit in the BIOS. I'll report the temps that I see in Bios in a few minutes.

Double check the HS installation... you may not be making good contact with the CPU core, and are getting a fast overheat-->shutdown.

If the mobo overheat protection is set to verify xxxx rpms of the HS fan, and you are not connected to the "CPU fan" header, the mobo may think no fan is present/not working, and shut itself down.

Just checked a couple of shutdowns, at around 54.5 C / 127 F

Does this seem too hot? I'll reset the HS and see what happens then. I've since placed a desktop fan on high intot he motherboard.

i had a problem like this with my computer which is similar, as is my friend, both of us have the barton 2500 and the A7N8x (i know its not the same) but my computer would shut down in the bios or just before, and it turned out that i had a faulty power supply, and i think thats whats wrong with my friends too. I would just check it with a different power supply that you know works

Do these CPU's require a certain power supply? I have my Athlon 1.4ghz here but I think it's only a 350w power supply.

I just reset the HS and i'm gonna try again. I've also tried different (PC2100) memory with no luck

I think the heatsink was the problem. I reset it and so far it's now readin 2500+ and installing WinXP.

Thanks guys, i'll confirm once Win is installed!

Good for you! Sometimes we don't quite get that HS flat against the CPU core, and then the fun begins...
