XP - Opening .exe across network

I'm having troubles with an XP pro box on a 2K network. I have created a shortcut to an .exe on the server. When I try to run the .exe I get the "download File" dialogue box. I don't my XP user to have select open from the dialogue box everytime he wants to run the program. He is a member of the power users group, I have gone through the local security policies, I have changes the "Local Intranet" security settings in "nternet options" to low. What am I mising?

Thanks
Al

How are you accessing the file? Via HTTP, MS File Sharing, or?

File Sharing... I have mapped a drive to a dir containing the .exe on the server, then created the shortcut to the exe... works great on the 2k boxes.

The .exe works on the xp box, I just want to eliminate the "Download File" Dialogue box.

Brilliant!

I found the MS Article for this...

http://support.microsoft.com/default...&Product=winxp

It looks like I have to call support to get the download... so stupid!

Out of curiousity, with a different user on the same computer do you get the same results or does it work correctly?

Any user including admin and admins... This fix that I linked to is just a workaround though. my problem with this fix is that it will allow me to tell xp to always open .exe's (including internet downloads and emails) without asking. That scares me... .

there has to be a way that you can map to an .exe on a network share without having xp treat it as a download... Doesn't there?

Yes, there should be abetter fix. I don't use XP much and I haven't ran across that problem before, but I'll keep that problem in mind.

Zenyo, are you clicking a link on a webpage?
Thats not referring to a shortcut its saying a hyperlink on a webpage

This is just a shortcut on your desktop or somethign isn't it?

Did you possibly bork your intranet zone settings?

do you possibly have your desktop "view as a webpage"??

Try putting the shortcut in your quick launch bar

NO it's not a webpage... This a shortcut to an .exe on a network share.

I have been through the intranet zones and they look fine. I have tried high, medium, low, custom and default settings. I'll go through it again tough.

I looked for a "view as a webpage" but I couldn't find anything.

Good thinking about the quick launch... Gave it a shot but it didn't work...

This type of stuff is always fun isn't it

If so try resetting it to double clicking
