What can't I watch video?

I normally download footages or mini movies that are in all sorts of format. Such as *.wmv, avi, mov, mpeg etc. I also download a couple of video player from the net, like divX player, quicktime and etc.

But there are 2-3 video that i couldn't watch and a message appears,saying that i need to get a newer codec. After clicking the OK button, it will eventually play the movie but theres no pictures, just sounds. Why? Because of the codec thing again? And some also, wouldn't run at all even if it is in *.mpeg format. Why again?

1. Where to get all codecs from the net?
2. Why can't I play WMV format? Isn't that a window player format?
3. So do I have to update my codec always?

Hey, I just noticed... the website where you can get Nimo Codecs Pack says that spyware and adware comes with it. Do these get detected by Ad-Aware or Spybot?

What is the need of having it change and update too often? I think I have just update the divX 5.1 and that could be latest codec i have found.
Plus, I can't play *.wmv format on my pc as before I have my computer formatted. I don't use kazaa to download any videos though, just surfing and you know that takes ages to find one, especially free ones. So after about an hour or more, downloading a 73mb video, everyone would decide to play it. But then, the message says something like "can't playback..." and there are just sounds running and the navigator bar is moving too. Its frustrating quite a bit
