DELL 22.6modem XJ4336 problem?

Hello,

I'm trying to help out a friend with her laptop computer. I have next to no experience with laptop specific items like PCMCIA cards for instance. She has AOL (bad choice) and can't get connected to the internet after her friend took the laptop on a trip and upon return it wouldn't connect to the internet.

I went over her house to look at it yesterday. I uninstalled the modem and reinstalled it. Then I reset the defaults for the modem and then I cleared out and reinstalled all the access numbers. So, basically I wiped out the modem and the access numbers and reinstalled everything.

Well, it dials and then makes buzzing noises, gets to step 2 dialing and then just buzzes for a few minutes until a screen comes up saying it can't establish a connection (AOL was unable to establish a connection). I've went through the steps in the help menu 3 times just to make sure that I covered everything.

I'm thinking it is the PCMCIA that is not functioning properly but I don't know how to tell if it is bad unless I would have another PCMCIA card. Problem is, I dont'have another card to use.

WHat should I do?

Open phone dialer and see if you can dial your own number.

hi,

I used the phone dialer, dialed my number and it said another program is using the selected telephony device, try again after the other program completes.

Then I clicked under tools, connect using

There are two listings of the same modem there.

Megahertz Telephony Modem XJ4336-CC4336
Megahertz Telephony Modem XJ4336-CC4336 #2

It was set on the first one so I set it on the one that had a "#2" at the end at redialed and it dialed both my number and my other phone line in the house.

I tried messing around, assigning other ports and... well basically doing everything and it still comes up with can't establish connection with AOL.

So, I called AOL for the 3rd time now. The tech support person showed me how to run an autofix that AOL uses. I'm running it now but so far no luck.
