Monitor problem: coloured areas near corners

I just got a 19" Iiyama VM 1451. But when I tested the monitor out for the first time, I noticed a strange problem. Large areas of the screen (near the top-left and top-right corners) are off-colour. Against the default light-blue Windows desktop colour, there appear wide green and purple-hued bands, but these colours vary depending on what colour the monitor is supposed to be showing in the affected parts of the screen.

By adjusting some of the monitors inbuilt OSD settings, I was able to reduce the effect somewhat, but the display is still obviously way off-colour in large parts of the screen.

Any ideas on what this problem is (and how to fix)?

Welcome to the forum!

Sounds like you just need to "deguass" it.

It should have a degauss button on it or degauss will be one of the functions of the on screen adjustments etc.

If that doesnt do it...you can still take it to a tv shop and have them use a "degausser"...its a thing that looks like a steering wheel and they hold it in front of the monitor, hit the button and pull the steering wheel back away from the monitor...kinda weird looking but....

We had a whole bunch of phillips monitors with the same purple bluish splotches on them as you describe.....then we hired a tv repair dude for a while..he bought a degausser and that fixed most of the splotch problems.

Too bad cuz the tv guys charge out the wazoo.

Oh yes, the monitor had a deguass function but that seemed to have no effect at all (other than make the screen bounce around a bit).

well the phillips we had did the same thing..the factory degauss is nowhere near as strong as the steering wheel thing, lol.

Is it a new monitor??

Seems we found a degausser for around $40, but its not worth it unless you have a bunch of monitors

Is there something magnetic near those corners? I used to have that problem when magnetic things were too close to me monitor.

It's an old system (windows 95), vid card is Trio 64 (I think). Not a 3d card.

BTW the settings I mentioned adjusting (which had a slight effect) was something called Landing.

I have not had the chance to test the monitor on another system yet. Something about its irregularity towards the corners seems to tell me the problem is the monitor not the system, though I could be mistaken (and other monitors work fine on the same system).

Hi there Nurba and welcome to the forum.
From you description, I would say that your problem is almost certainly magnetic field related ... the answer is a full degauss. If the one on the monitor is not working then you will either need to read up on how to do it and get a degaussing wand or get a technician to do it for you (the latter probably ...).
This happens when you put a magnetic field source too close to the monitor - it pulls the electron paths out of wack. If the field is quite strong or is left close to the monitor for a long time the effect can become permanent. It sounds like yours is permanent. Probably you had unshielded speakers attached to it or something like that. You can test the effect yourself by putting the end of a magnetised screwdriver against the monitor - but only do it for a moment ...
Hope that helps ...
Regards,
Dale.

I'd say it might be your speakers? My mate had the same problem with his old speakers, they weren't magnetically shielded and such, caused the top two corners of his monitor to change colour, to purple-ish.

Thanks for all the replies. Seems I'm going to need one of those degaussing things.

I'll keep you informed of any progress...
