MORE pc build probs...

Hi guys,

my friend was monkeying around with his computer the other day and basically took it apart and put it back together.. he isn't exactly tech savvy so I don't know wtf got into him.. anyways, he managed to break the little bracket that holds the hsf to the cpu.. no real harm done there, just a little metal piece... but the kicker is he super glued the thing back to the cpu to get it to stay put....

now his computer just boots up and shows the pretty dell logo and sits there.... no extra beeps or error messeges.. just sits there.....

so, is there any way to tell if he broke the cpu for sure, because i'm thinking maybe he could have missed something in reconnected everything.. Any input before he does something drastic like buying a new cpu.. although it might not be a bad thing to get a new one.

thanks in advance guys

edit:: btw it's a celeron 900 mhz and his comp was a stock Dell Dimension 2100

if the cpu was "cooked" I dont think youd be getting any sort of boot.

Hi there brasslemon,
JP speaks truly. The CPU is probably just overheating before it can boot fully, he needs to get some solvent onto that (but be careful not to spill it all over the place!) and buy a new heatsink/fan arrangement. I doubt he would be able to get a spare clip by itself. The other alternative is a bit of thermal glue, altho' I would suggest the first as the best way to go. He will also need some heat transfer compound to put betwixt the CPU and heatsink if he's not using the thermal glue.
Regards,
Elad.

Hi again brasslemon,
I was obviously being a bit vague ... the super glue he has used is acting as an insulator and his CPU is overheating. He needs to carefully remove the heatsink from the cpu with some solvent.
Cheers
Elad.

When I was younger, much younger, I was working on my hookah. The hoses fell out of the tapered fittings all the time. Crazy glue just came on to the market and I had a tube that was only used a couple of times but improperly capped off after use.

I squeezed the tube aiming at one of the hose holder pipes and nothing came out. I squeezed harder and still nothing. 2:00 am in the morning and I was getting a little impatient. I gave it all I had and sure enough, the glue started to release but with the crusty tip it sprayed all over my forehead and eye's....how many of you are laughing so far????

Well. I had the presence of mind not to blink. ( I thought it would be a good idea )

Off to my parents room to wake someone up to see if they had any ideas before my eye's started to water and I would have to blink.

My father rushed my stupid butt off to the hospital. All the way there he did little things like turn on the front windshield defrost, tried to make me laugh, clapped his hands loudly, anything to make me blink. A blinked one eye as it was becoming to much to cope with and sure enough, that was it for that eye.

I stumbled on the door threshold strip at the hospital emerg and promptly shut the other one. Boom, Boom, Boom….Out went the lights.

The reason I am relating this little story is because the Doctor said that Crazy Glue is water soluble after 3 days but he could expedite the release by using a gentle, "saline solution" to remove the glue.

Cheers!
