You could always try running the Microsoft Configuration Utility..
Start -> Run... -> msconfig
On the Startup tab, uncheck anything you don't really need. (If you see something you don't recognize, do a search (google) and discover what it is for, and if you really need it.)
Also, if you go into the event viewer and look for any errors, they might lead you to the source of the problem.
Start-> run... -> eventvwr.msc
