Norton Error in 2000
I am currently helping a friend of mine who decided to install Windows 2000 Professional. He owns Norton Internet Security 2003 and he installed it without any rpoblems at all. The problems come when its time to use Live Update. He downloads every update available but it installs everyone except two (Common Clients from Symantec and Updates for programs from Norton Internet Security) It says the client update has to be installed before the Internet Security Update can be installed. But when Installing the client update an error shows up (please check attachment) and the update fails and Live Update closes. The error is related to Visual C ++ something and he is currently using 2000 with Service pack 2. This happens with a fresh one too. After formatting his computer I install Norton right after the computer boots into Windows and when updating this error shows up. I must say Symantec's support in their website is really useless I couldnt find anything related to this. Please help if you know I tried everything possible and I just cant pass the update without that error.

Have you..
- Tried uninstalling, re-installing?
- installed as an Administrator that is local to the box?
- Do you have the correct permissions to the folders it is (trying) to install in?
You also might have a corrupted "Product.Catalog.LiveUpdate" file that is incorrectly reporting that components aren't installed. Try renaming the "Product.Catalog.LiveUpdate" file that you can find in: \Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\LiveUpdate
Otherwise, is it possible you have corrupt install media, or there is some incompatibility with versions?

- Yes, no difference same problem happens
- Yes
- As far I as I know yes
When I tried to go where you wanted to send me I noticed that my friend doesnt have that folder 'Application data' so I couldnt do what you told me to do. I have tried everything possible and the error keeps showing up. He finally decided to try out Windows XP Professional since he was going to anyways and when I helped him to install Norton in it everything went great except when it was time to update. Same error happens. The strange thing is when I installed on my machine Norton Internet Security 2003 I could install common clients and program for Internet security without having to install one of them so that I can install the other one. Well, it just seems impossible to not get that error.

I should have mentioned that the "Application Data" folder might be hidden. Visit the "Tools-> Folder Options..." menu, and on the View tab, show hidden files and folders.
Also, have you run any type of hardware diagnostics on this computer? If the problem is seen on different versions of Windows, even after a clean install, ... that could very well indicate there is something else in the way.
Check out the Device Manager, and see if any devices are showing errors or otherwise behaving incorrectly. Check out the event logs, and see if any other issues appear.
Lastly, you might try a wooden baseball bat against the monitor...

Well, I will try renaming the file you told me too to see if that changes something. I dont think the hardware has something to do with this since his computer runs perfectly without any problems at all regarding hardware issues. I have helped him alot though and the strange part is when I helped him to install Internet Security 2003 before 2004 was out this thing that you have to install the common client before the programs for internet security didnt exist, the updates ran smoothly and you didnt have to install a update before you could install an other. But since the 2004 release this has happened with him every single time. And why an error with Microsoft Visual C ++ ? I just dont get it. Well, I am close to be buying Norton Internet Security 2004 Pro soon and since the Pro version has licence to two computers I will use the second licence to install it in my friends computer and see if this error happens. If it does then screw Symantec, I will get another product from another brand instead

I think you're on the right track when you said you might go with something else. I've been doing tech support in Oregon for the past 8 years, and within the last 2-3 years Symantec has caused more system errors and problems than I have been able to keep track of. Great for my business, but not for consumers. I hate to knock Symantec, but the engineering put into their products lately seems extremely shortsighted. Norton is a very well known name, but I refer my customers to less known (although rising in the ranks) software such as AVG, Zone alarm, ect...

| Yes, I have already searched in Symantec's support site, but I cant find anything related to this. The link you passed me is explaining what to do when you get this: "LU6004: LiveUpdate did not complete successfully. Due to a transmission error, one or more LiveUpdate components failed internal authentication. Please run LiveUpdate again. If the error persists, contact your network administrator or LiveUpdate provider." But I dont get that at all, I get what I attached in my first post. I think Symantecs support in their site is a disaster, its totally useless IMO. I am very dissapointed since I have used Symantec products for a long time now and I am considering to change brand regarding Anti Viruses and Firewalls. I have tried many such as Zone Alarm (didnt like it that much) Mcafee (screwed my computer, had to format) and more. Well time will tell but right now I will stick with Symantec until I find something that I like. Thanks for the help guys!
