windows media player problem

Ok heres my problem. For a long time i played mpeg files with no problem at all. All of a sudden a couple weeks ago, every mpeg file i play with windows media player, i have a problem with. The most common problem i have is that when i play the mpeg file, say the file is a 20 minute video, it will play 1 minute or so of the video, then the slider reaches the end, and the video cuts off, but the sound continues to play. Trust me, ive already uninstalled and reinstalled my codecs, even did a uninstall with windows media player. And another weird thing that happens is sometimes when i restart my comp and immediatly play the mpeg file, it will run perfectly, but then if i try to play it a second time, it will mess up all over again. WEIRD STUFF. Pleassssse someone help me out, all comments are appreciated. Thank you in advance, Scott.

mpeg1 files do not require an external codec, it's integrated into windows since w95.

Sounds like a driver issue. Have you installed anything new recently? Installing a video card such as an ATI AIW with old drivers will really mess up your system when trying to play video.
