why isnt verizon competitive with cable?

I have been wondering this for a while. i have the 1.5 down/128k up package right now, and that is the fasted verizon offers for home users. I would like to see a faster upload speed, but the only way to do that is to get business class DSL which is twice as expensive($79/month). I called verizon a few times asking about why they dont want to stay competitive with cable speeds, and why isnt there another package for home users, but i either get the run around, transferred to the automated system, or they just give me attitude and tell me "because". (no, really, a tech agent blatantly said "because"). Anyone else wonder why they don't have a faster upload?

I just checked comcast (which i have) and they say the speed is 1.5 down/256k up

I don't know about other cable companys, but i'm sure it varies for price and speed

If I recall correctly, many places for comcast had switch to 3mb connections.

Work

Mebbe Verizon is still trying to recoup their losses from fighting the RIAA's Gestapo-like subpoenas....

Smart-aleck comment, but not really much to laugh about here...

Well you can move to the netherlands, they have TDSL and are moving up to VDSL.
I'm switching over to comcast as soon as I can, cable is coming to my area and is in place, they are just testing it.
It will be better than any other isp here, except for business grade dsl, however qwest always manages to fall short on even that

I'm just soo happy that qwest bought out MSN, no more msn!!!
Or it maybe is time to choose a place over in the netherlands or scandinavia. Their governement pays good money to give them true broadband.
Unlike here

SBC/Ameritech in the Midwest offers an aDSL "bargain basement" package of 1500/128 for less than $30, and a 1500/256 package for less than $40. Both of these packages are getting U/L increases at no change in cost between now (late October) and next spring. The 1500/128 will become 1500/256 and the current 1500/256 will become 1500/384.

I'm currently at 1500/256 with SBC/Ameritech

whenever i say anything about cable or cable being faster to a verizon phone person, the whole conversation just jumps to him keep telling me that DSL is guarenteed bandwidth. Sorry but im not going to give up my 10Mb down 1 Mb up cable connection for SLOW guaranteed bandwidth.

Verizon will be introducing Rate Adaptive DSL and SHDSL to markets next year. In addition, Verizon is working on deploying fiber straight to the premise and providing voice and data services through those fiber links.
