cannot start ntbackup

I cant seen to start ntbackup from the start menu or via command line. I'm running SBS 4.5 and use at commands to fire off the backup routines. If you look in the task manager you can see an instance if backup running. however, it's not. From the task manager, you can not kill the backup process. if you attempt to fire ntbackup off again via the start menu or command line, it shows another icon in the task manager that is different the the one that cannot be killed. each time you try to fire off ntbackup it keeps adding an icon in the task manager. These icons you can kill but not the original one. I'v seen this one time before and was unable to correct. A reboot resets everything, where no instances of backup are running in the task manager, however, when you try to fire it off in any manner the same problem arises. Please help.
