Outdoors Scandisk problem

When trying to defrag my hard drive I get a message that there are errors on the disk, so I should run Scandisk.

When I run scandisk I get a message that something is writing to my hard drive and that Scandisk has stopped. I only have systray and explorer in my task manager. I am using Windows ME.

Any ideas as I cannot correct the errors or defrag my hard drive?

You should run SCANDISK and DEFRAG when you computer is in Safe Mode.

Go here: http://beemerworld.com/tips and select the table for your Operating System.

Look for "Maintain Your WinX PC"

It will tell you how to go about shutting down things that will disrupt the scandisk and defrag in Windows.

Performing System Maintenance routines in Safe Mode is the best way but not always prudent or advantageous.

Cheers!

If you close everything in task manager except explorer and systray and turn off your screensaver you should also be good to go.
