The easiest and most secure route would be to get a router. You can find them for <$75 nowadays. All you'd have to do is plug in the modem and the PC's.

If you chose not to get the router, you'll have to at least have 2 NIC's on one of the PC's in order to share the cable modem.

A cable modem is a very good idea, however the only problem is, with networking you have about 100' worth of rj45 cable to work with here.
The problem is you have only soo many feet between the cable, estimated is 100' max before you run into any line issues with the imense distance with the cables, as 100' is even running at the limmit.
The only feasible option I would suggest is getting a wireless router for the cable. Even possibly getting switch between the two if you insist on wires.

Cat5 has a maximum distance of 100 Meters not too 100 ft. The cable will be plenty long enough and withing spec.

That should be about 300' (100 yards) for Cat5 cable.

Getting a WiFi router and WiFi NIC's would put the cost at closer to $200-$300.

If you do get wireless, be sure to secure it.

Also, what i do in my house is i have a box in the master bedroom closet, i have the router in there and i have cat5 cables going through the ceiling, down the walls, to a cat5 plug in the wall, the whole house is networked upstairs and down.

How i get the cable modem to reach the router is in office i have the cable modem in there, it goes from the modem to the wall, and it goes up into attic (crawlspace) and goes down to the box in the master bedroom, to the router and the router spreads the connection.
