AMD Athlon 1400 Compatibility Problem?

I have a XT983 HP Pavilion computer system and the original chip is a AMD Athlon 1400 (Non-Xp)(200Mhz FSB) CPU. The CPU chip went bad and I replaced it with an AMD 1.3Ghz (266Mhz FSB) CPU. Now when I boot up, the computer constantly restarts. I also get blue screens when I try to do the Windows XP Repair feature. I tried to replace the CPU with a AMD 1600 XP (Not sure of the FSB) and it does the same thing, but not as bad as the 1.3Ghz chip. So I am thinking that the motherboard does not accept anything but 200Mhz FSB chips. So I have a AMD Athlon 850Mhz (200Mhz FSB) Sock A Chip ordered and I am hoping this will work. Do you think the problem was in the FSB being incompatible? Thanks!

The CPU won't have any problems running at slower bus speeds.

With that many CPUs being replaced, I would suspect that the problem lies elsewhere, like perhaps the memory or motherboard.

Your HP most likely uses a proprietary motherboard. Does the HP site give any info regarding the newest CPU that system's motherbaord supports?

With the newer CPUs, during POST are either of the new CPUs properly identified?

If you are not at the latest BIOS version, try flashing BIOS to latest from floppy, and see if the mobo will then identify the CPU.

I've switched from T-Bird (1.2/200@1.4/266) to Palomino (XP2100+) under W2KPro and did not get BSODs as you described. Board was an Asus A7V133, however.

With the 1.3Ghz CPU installed (200Mhz FSB), the computer system will not boot at all (it restarts before it gets to the beginning XP logo screen). With the Athlon XP 1600 Chip installed, the computer system will boot all the way until the desktop comes up and it will restart. I formated the hard drive, but I tried to reinstall Windows XP and I will get some "blue screens" during the installation. I tried changing the RAM. The computer has nothing else special one it (no expansion cards are installed). With the original CPU installed. The computer turns on, but the picture on the screen will not come on (no picture). The hard drive will not even read with the old chip. I put a new one in (1.3Ghz Athlon) and it boots up buy constantly restarts. That is why I expected the Old CPU to be bad. I also tried the old CPU in another PC. It does the same thing. The only thing that I havn't tested on the PC is the mobo and the hard drive. I havn't flashed the bios. The PC reconizes the CPUs correctly. HP website doesn't say what type of CPUs are supported. They just say what came in it: Athlon 1400/200FSB. Any other suggestions?
