Gaming GFX to the max.

Hi Techians.

I've got my eye on an Asus ATi Radeon 9800 XT/TVD 256Mb Half Life 2 Bundle. From what I have been told, ATi are currently selling the best card on the market, but I'm only prepared to put in £400 (roughly $650) if I know I won't have to buy another one for quite some time.

I currently have a 3d blaster GeForce 4 Ti 4200, which has been working less and less efficiently as the games have been getting more and more graphics intensive. It will just about run EVE Online, and barely just manages the HALO PC version.

But I am not happy with settling for "just about run", so it's time for a better card.

BUT, will it be worth waiting for Nvidia to release their new card in december? And is what I'm hearing about ATi drivers being bad really true? I would also like some facts on stories I've heard about Nvidia cheating in the recent graphics card competitions.

Ultimately, I would like to know if any card these companies are releasing in the near future will better what I can buy now, and if so, by how much.

Thanks.

Yep, thanks. I think I've made up my mind that the 9800 is the most powerful graphics processor in the world.

Thanks again for the useful link, can't beleive I didn't notice that thread before I posted this one.

That is the Great British Stirling, or the "pound". It's worth about 1.2 dollars.

Moving on to rawk's question, I'd suggest a GeForce Ti 4600, which may be a little over budget for you, but it would be the best you could get in that sort of price range.

Although as you can probably tell from what I wrote in my first post, I'm not totally happy with it's performance. If I were you, I'd save up and wait for the release of the Radeon 9800.

Because the Radeon 9800 is running on what is more loosely described as "breakthrough" technology, you'll most likely never have to even think about buying a new card for at least another two years.

It's up to you of course, but from what I can see there are two choices; buy a somewhat low end graphics card every few months, or buy the best graphics card in the world and not have to buy again for at least 1 year...

Ok I'm rambling on about it now so I'll just shut up.

Pff, it's probably worth about $1,000, because their currency is so poor.

I'm running a Geforce 4 Ti4200, and it runs all the latest games @ 1024x768 res. all high details no problems.
