Hard Drive Detects Emminent Failure

I have a Compaq Persaio (unk model at this time) and everything works fine, but everytime it goes to boot, it give me this lovely error message (see title) the gives me two options F1-boot F8 (i think) to enter setup. i press F1 and it boots fine. Its a little slow now and then and the HDD makes that lovely compaq large footprint drive clickign noise. all runs fine. just wanted to remove that.

I hope you dont have anything critical on the drive cuz it sounds like its dying.

Go into BIOS and see if S.M.A.R.T is enabled is enabled on the hard drive. If so, disable it.

Go into the bios (setup) and find where that error is enabled. Disable it, save and exit. If you can find out who made the hard drive (should tell you in the "Standard Features Setup" from the BIOS menu). You can go to the website for that make hard drive, download and run their test utility which will give you the straight poop about your hard drive...failing or not.

here is a program that I personally feel is better than even the manufacturer's utilities because it actually tells you what is going on and not just some cryptic error/rma reason...

http://www.ariolic.com/activesmart/

it will also give you the threshold numbers for triggering a SMART warning

BTW that drive is dying.. backup now before it's too late

XxNiXxX... what do you mean "the computer has no info on it"?..

Did you access the BIOS setup menu?

It is rare (these days) for a BIOs to not report the make and model of a hard drive.

Go to the following URL, Download the free Ada32 system information utility...run it and that will tell you the name, make and model of the drive (unless, Compaq had the drive made especially for them..which only adds Compaq's data to the stored data on the ROM chips data base and not the HDD's manufacturer...worth a shot).
http://www.aida32.hu/aida32.php (simular to Sisoft Sandra but better accuracy).
