1000 mhz Pentium III or 2.4Ghz Celeron

What should I choose between the two for a notebook computer?

The price difference will be about $150 with the Celeron being slightly more.

good question..what kind of ram would the P3 have..DDR? or sdram?

Is it a P3 mobile chip?

The celeron.

Ive used 2.4ghz celeron desktops and IMO they run about equal to an Athlon XP 1700+ which is faster than a 1ghz P3.

John Prophet, I think it is 256 SDRAM.

Pinoy87, The thing with Celeron is that it has no cache and I don't know how it will run. One thing I want to do with the notebook is use a GPS with it. Therefore, it will be constantly refreshing the maps on the screen. Would it still run well?

Yea even though its a celeron the clock speed is just to much faster then the old p3. Plus the p4 still has a faster bus and more memory bandwidth. So yea basicly the p3 is good but just getting a little to old.

"the thing with the celeron is it has no cache".

lol. This is a persistant rumour..also a mistake.

The only celerons that had NO cache...were the first ones....like in the 300mhz range.

The 2ghz celeron has 128kb cache....so it has SOME, lol..not a lot.

The 1ghz P3 probably has 256kb cache.

But, as stated...in this case the speed difference wins out over the cache difference.

check this out..a cool article where they tested like every major cpu from P1s to P4 and athlons etc....is good for showing relative strengths. http://www6.tomshardware.com/cpu/20030217/index.html

and you see from here http://www6.tomshardware.com/cpu/200...mparison_table that a 2ghz celeron would destroy a 1ghz P3

How about battery life? From what I've seen the p3m offers better life and are usually in smaller cases. The new centrino's are losely based on the p3m for their efficiency both power and performance wise. That graph also shows a p3 beating a celeron of a higher clock frequency...something to do with the cache possibly?

Personally I'd go with the p3m
