Possible Z-680 sub rattle fix?
I just recieved my second set of speakers today and warmed them up for a couple of hours before bringing on the ultimite rattle test, the intro sequence of Top Gun. I was extremely upset to find that the rattle was present in this second sub just as it was in the first.
After calming down and letting the sub cool down, I came back to it and removed the metal cover from the back. With the metal back separated from the cabinet I continued to play music and movies and after spending a couple of hours with a flashlight and my ear against every inch of the sub, it sounded like the rattle might be air that was coming out of the cabinet through the holes for the screws to the metal back.
Now I am far from a speaker expert as this is the first set that I have ever purchased, so someone correct me if I am wrong.
I screwed the metal back on as tight as I could and when playing the Top Gun intro again it seemed like the rattle was less than it had been. Or maybe it was just me hoping that I could actually fix this problem that has plagued so many Z-680 owners. The rattle was not totally gone, but maybe it is from air coming out of the holes where the wires come out of the back of the cabinet and connect to the metal back. Or from a screw that is loose on some part of the metal back.
As I said, I am not a speaker expert so I do not know if I have done any damage by pulling the metal back away from the cabinet, but it does not seem that I have so far. I also seems very unlikely that such an easy fix would have alluded so many people and even the company that makes the speakers, but I don't know.
I would be interested if the tightening of the screws that connect the metal back to the subwoofer cabinet did anything for any other peope who have been plaqued by this very frustrating problem.
Let me know. Thanks.
