Windows user interested in Linux

Hello Linux users, newbie and elite.

I'm thinking of putting of Linux OS on a box, and I was wondering which distro or version of Linux I should put on it.

I have been reading through various threads about Linux, and I'm at the point where curiosity killed the cat.

So, with the cliche` out of the way, I would love to hear some opinions.

Whats your computers specs?
I would go for either Mandrake or Redhat. Two distros that are very newbie friendly. I personally recommend Redhat, but Mandrake is an excellent distro too, either one will be just fine. For you to know you can download the .iso files of the distros for free at www.linuxiso.org where you can find a variety of different distros and different versions. HTH's

Thanks everyone for your replies. I was studying a little so I haven't checked my post until now.

Hey, jkrohn that is a really useful site. Thanks.

So, all I have to do is download mandrake from www.linux.org
and install it on a box?

Are there specific PC requirements to run Mandrake?

I'll ask more questions once, I get my box on line, along with some research.

Thanks again everyone.

Presonally I would wait one week. Then Mandrake 9.2 will be released to the public. You will be able to get it from Linuxiso.org.

It is 3 CD's and you will want all 3. Check the boxes to install EVERYTHING. It will be about 2.5 GB and contain a lot of things you don't need, but it will install a lot of stuff to make life eaiser.

What PC are you looking to run it on?

nice link

jkrohn,

I bookmarked that site of yours! I'm using Mandrake 9.0 now and getting anxious for the 9.2 public release. Your site is a great tutorial for anyone wanting to give Mandrake a try.

Jkron

I'm just putting it on a AMD athlon system
about 768mb of ram pc2100

No extra HD yet.

It's going to be my learning computer. I have XP on my main system. I would like to eventually make a dual boot system, but that will come later.
