arctic silver or no??

am installing a new xp 2000 with stock fan/sink on a new board.

is it still worth the effort to scrape and clean off the heatsink and cpu and use arctic silver or go ahead and use the pad thats on the cpu?? has amd improved the heat dissapation qualities with this pad setup?

seems like lots of extra effort. is it really worth it??

If not OC'ing just go with the pads.

Pesonally, I prefer grease over thermal tape...

Arctic silver will make 2~3C difference from cheap thermal grease...

I always recomend the Artic silver. When I worked in a computer store a few people would bring in cooked CPU's cause of the standard AMD tape. then again i think that they were OCing......

BTW, arctic silver 5 just came out
seems to be a BIG improvement over ceramique(sp?) and AS3

Tape? I haven't seen tape on a cpu in a long time ... I assume you are referring to the phase-change pads ... thermal tape should not be used on an Athlon cpu, but the stock pads (mostly pink or grey at the moment) that come with AMD HSF arrangements are quite adequate if you don't overclock.

Do please note that if you AS you are voiding the AMD warranty on the CPU

I have a 2500+ runnin' on "The Pad" for the last few months with nothing but stock HSF and am running a cool 39-40C running FAD and UD at the same time at all times

The pad is fine if you're not OC'ing

If you put the AS on even a BIT too thick it acts as an insulator instead of a conductor and will cause it to get HOTTER instead of cooler
