Tough Networking Question

Hi, here is my problem.

I have a cable connection in my dorms at college. The college internet is wireless but has had seriuos problems, and basicaly doesnt work. I want to share my cable internet with friends in room next door, using 'our wireless nic cards, that we used to use for schools internet. So how would i go about doing this? I want to be able to control who connects to my internet, hopefully by setting up passworded accounts, or such. Ive tried network set-up wizard but it gets an "error" when i try. It seems i keep gettin conflicts of IP's (of course). Anyways, any advice would be helpful. I have windows XP pro, firend has windows XP home.
Hopefully there is a easy way without having to buy an acces point, etc.

P.S. what is the "direct connection" option in network setup wiz.
And what exactly is "ad-hoc" option.

Thanks in advance for help.

One method to share the Internet is to use WinXP's ICS to share your Internet connection over the Wireless. One problem it is that it will not limit who connects to it. So you need to secure the wireless connection as much as possible. Easier to do with an WAP but... you could also use a firewall like Sygate. Then set your friends' wireless IP addresses manually to something very high (like 192.168.0.221, 192.168.0.222, 192.168.0.223) and then use Sygate to block all other IPs on the wireless. SO anyone who randomly connects to your Ad Hoc network will get a low IP address (starting with 192.168.0.2) but be blocked by Sygate.

For this to work, you will also need to set your friends' DNS IP and Default Gateway manually.

with XP's ICS, the clients would use 192.168.0.1 for both DNS server IP and Default Gateway.

Depending on the router you are using, you can assign MAC IP Address Filter where only allowed MAC addresses are able to access your network... That's how I have my Dlink wireless router set up.

A bit blunt specto, you might want to show some respect to NDC. But I forget how much college students think they know ;-)

Edit:

Lets do a basic calculation: 7867 - 12 = 7855, And 99% of NDC's posts are answers to other peoples questions.

Sorry, but this kind of stuff burns me up.
