pc build probs

hey guys, I just put together a new comp and (new mobo and case, everything else was leftover from my last setup (which was factory built ) )..

I start it up for the first time and after one healthy beep it checks the processor and the memory, then the drives, so far so good, and awaits pressing delete to continue and setup the bios... (so it says at the bottom of the screen) oh yeah.. award bios btw...

anyways, the keybord doesn't respond.. and yeah, i did remember to hook it up, checked the connection multiple times, even went back and reseated the memory just in case.. although why that would have anything to do with it i dunno...

the keybord is standard ps/2 not usb and the mobo is a soyo sy-tisu

any ideas? one thing that might make a diff in your reply is that I don't have a floppy drive right now b/c my old one broke and I haven't gotten a new one yet... could that have anything to do with it?

and one more thing, it's not just that the delete key won't initialize bios setup, the num lock, caps and scroll lock keys won't light up their led's like they should so I don't think it's getting any power at all...

any advice much appreciated, i'm a computer building noob so even the smallest bits of info are probably going to help...

ty in advance.

it looks to me that the ps/2 port u plug in the keyboard to isnt working, i would suggest asking a friend to let u borrow his/her usb keyboard so u can get through the bios, and if that doesnt work, post what kinda mobo u got and ppl here at techimo will probably be able to help

Welcome to the Board!

Good chance the mainbaord is grounded in the case.
Pull it and set it up on a phone book/etc.
Just mouse/keyboard, power supply, cpu, ram and vid card.
If the keyboard blinks/responds, check the mainboard mounts in the case...

what for keyboard brand? If it was from a factory build (aka: hp...etc) you may need a driver for the keyboard.

Hp doesthat alot...I know from experience.

ty for the attention truckie, it's a Dell keyboard.. but i don't think it needs specific drivers.. i've reformatted my hd before and it was fine all the way thru.

i'm pissed because I bought it from TigerDirect and they have a buck nasty return policy, like you have to get the manufacturer to proclaim it's defectiveness and give you a special confirmation number, and since soyo is based in taiwan.... well, needless to say i don't want to spend the time it will take on the phone overseas...

so basically it's all or nothing.. could it be that a usb keyboard would work where the ps/2 won't? i could go out and buy one to test the theory but i see that as a last resort... thanks for all the input guys.

OK first things first make sure you have it plugged into the correct ps2 plug usually the plug closest to the mobo. If so and still a no go then I would try a USB keyboard.
