A few weeks ago I went to Iowa to visit my parents. While I was there my dad asked me to take a look at his PC, the sound wasn't working. Well after a quick inspection I found the problem, he had installed a sound card a while ago, but when he set his PC up this time he plugged the speakers into the onboard audio plugs(which, of course, were disabled).

Then he was having a software problem. He was running into errors while upgrading to XP from 98SE. We monkeyed with that for the rest of the night, and never got it to work right, but I discovered a few problems.

1. He was running 2 optical drives, 3 USB devices, 2 HDDs, a vid card, and a sound card on a 250W PSU.

2. When he got that computer, they lived in Atlanta, GA. And down there they don't bury their phone lines. So if your PC is hooked up to the phone line and you get a thunderstorm, ZAPP!!!, you just singed your mobo. Well that happened 4 times!!! Which would explain why the PCI slots were bad.

3. He has a P3 PC, which isn't a problem, just makes it difficult to order parts.

So, I made a recommendation, upgrade your processor, mobo, RAM, and PSU. So (with a great deal of grumbling from my mom) he ordered the parts. They came in last week, so I went down to help him install everything. The hardware went in flawlessly. Then we started having problems with windows, drivers, etc.

We got everything working except his Juno connection, he was going to take care of that. He called me a few hours after I got home on Sunday, to tell me that the system was totaly messed up. Part f the problem was that he had upgraded to XP and uninstalled the upgrade repeatedly without formating the HDDs, so naturally there was an accumulation of junk that had to wiped.
So he formats and reinstalls (which is what he's doing at this moment).

A little while ago I get a call from him with a windows question. And in the background you can plainly hear my mom chewing his butt for screwing up the PC, and how much she can't stand computers, etc. But she's the one on the internet 2 hours a night sending me a bunch of junk emails!!

Parents are funny.

PC illiterate parents are cool, aren't they?
My parents send me their computer about every 6 months or so. Seems no matter what form of protection they have, they still manage to get at least a dozen virii .
They will open anything and everything.
Snow white? Sure!
Wicked screensaver? Why not!

They crack me up.
