i would try deleting the .gaim directory then try opening it again. if that dont work might try reinstalling.

| exactly, just make sure you see the hidden folders as well because thats what the "." is for as in .gaim.
if you use konqueror for a file manager you can go up top to " view" then " show hidden files"

If you've used it then that directory (.gaim) is there ShawShank. I'm not that fimiliar with KDE but S.D's got your square on how to show hidden directories in Konqueror.
If you want to do from a command line try this in a terminal:
rm -Rf .gaim
and it'll be gone. By default your terminal should open at the root of your home directory so you shouldn't need to do anything else.
Write back if that doesn't fix it. GAIM is easily the best IM client in Linux (unless Koepete has made some serious strides since I quite using Linux as a desktop).

I type too damn slow.....
.gaim is where all your personal settings for that directory are kept.
If you do a:
ls -fla
in a terminal window in your /home/you directory you'll see a bunch of folders that start with a "." . The "." means it hidden and most of the ones at the root of your home directory are were the your user specific setting to a program are kept. It's not a bad idea to poke around in those when you're new to Linux and just getting used to how things work. It's a good way to fimiliar yourself with how things work.
