reboot... repeatedly hit f8 while rebooting, a menu will come up. Select safe-mode and try to defragment in there.

While you are at it....try to find someone with Windows ME and copy the defrag.exe off of it....paste it into your windows folder and when it asks..choose "yes" to replacing the defrag that is already there...the ME defragger is wayyyyyyyyyyyyy faster.

I always got that when I used Windows 98.
Gomer's suggestion always worked for me.
But I agree with JP, Windows ME's derfragmenter is way faster than Windows 98's. Never tried his suggestion though

there was a free download for that me replacement , just can't rember where it was, you might try a google search for it.
it does runn a lot faster too.
and yes it is best to turn off the screen saver, or run in safe mode.

Ctrl-alt-del and get the end task screen up...remove all apps that are running except Explorer and Systray. Then, defrag will run. It will not run when anything else is writing or attempting to write to the disk. Just running a screen saver "writes" to the disk, etc.

Edit:

I just looked (and copied to my Win98SE folder) the defrag.exe from the WinME setup CD. Its under the folder Win9x and is located in folder Win_16

Sometimes that's not enough Bovon. It will sometimes work but sometimes it won't. Safemode is usually the best option.

I also recommend the WinME defragger for Win98 just like JP does. I've got Win98 on my lappy and use WinME's defragger on it with no problems. I downloaded the defragger from Bootdisk.com but they either aren't hosting it anymore or I can't find it.

Well, he did say only explorer is running in task manager..so he has that part covered.

I was just thinking ti could be screen saver cuz that doesnt show in task manager.

He might also want to try downloading the "startup control panel" which is a great little app that works like msconfig but it seems to show more stuff....so maybe it would show stuff starting that task manager doesnt reveal.

http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml

Then again, he might just be able to look in msconfig to see what all is starting....maybe something there isnt showing in task manager.

Okedoke..thanks for that Tiger. The only time I ever had a problem running defrag (and it started over) was when I inadvertently left something running that would write to the disk...heck, even playing solitaire would stop defrag dead in its tracks!! LOL.
