XP Failure

I leave my PC on all the time. Tonight I got back and saw that MSN Messenger crashed - no prob. Then all other apps were crashing. So, I rebooted the PC. XP said it had to use a copy of another registry. (uh oh).

Still, none of the apps ran. I tried running program files-> accessories-> system tools-> system restore, to roll back XP to an earlier date but that crashed.

I ran the SP1 service pak, which I keep on the server and it ran but it didn't help except the roll back worked. However, I only rolled it back a day but that wasn't good enough - apps still didn't run.

Right now, I'm running XP Pro setup and doing an upgrade to see if it can get me back to where I don't have to reload all my apps.

My data is safe as it is stored on my server which uses RAID and is also backed up.

with all your data safe and stuff you might wanna just double check that....sounds like while you were you someone hit you with a bitchin virus and it somehow allowed him/her/it to load a different registry onto your computer. A friend of mine used to steal registry information and install it on his own (didn't hurt the other computers he was just looking for certain key information to steal) but if he ever would've restarted he would be in the same boat. Chances are the only way to fix it without a total format is to get real good real fast with the repair tool that you can use with Win XP in the same setup as when you format drives and stuff. It'll take you to a console and you hafta know the commands. I never really used it but it should be in one of the Win XP books, or if you have pirated version of XP then you can check the window's resource files online on microsoft's site.

I don't think discussion of pirated software is proper for this forum

It's a legit copy of XP.

I also Ghost the HD to an image on a 2nd 120GB drive. I ended up restoring the last Ghost image and making updates from then.

Mentioning pirated software is ok, he simply said "if you have a pirated version of XP"...no harm done.

Now if he would have pointed to where a pirated version of XP can be located...that would be a no-no.

Glad you got it working MTA...

if it wasn't for the Ghost images, I would have had to format and start over. XP was failing to update the present installation. It just kept rebooting at 37% left.

I'm now going to Ghost the image every 30days and keep two generations.
