?'s on a Gateway G6-450 desktop

Hoping someone will admit to having or had one of these.

I'm trying to help my sister long distance on her Gateway computer and she doesn't know the specs and googling and Gateway has thus far been fruitless. She say it says G6-450 on the front.

First of all she wants to upgrade it. I said: "Why? Buy a new one."

She wants to put in a CD burner to archive the jpegs of her three grandchildren (last one born 2 day ago).

How proprietary is the Gateway box when it comes to upgrading?

She says she has slot covers on the front so I am assuming that I have room to put one in.

Will any burner fit or am I going to have problems with the case design?

All I know is she has a HDD and a DVD-ROM.

From what I've gathered, her HDD is less than 20GB - probably 14GB. She want to upgrade to W2K so she can send her pictures to Kodak - 98 and Kodak aren't speaking to each other.

I'm thinking to throw in a new 40GB drive and slave her 14 and then install 2K and after salvaging her data formatting the 14 for storage.

Any help appreciated here.

Bill

My dad had one of those and he wanted me to 'fix it up'. After messing with it for a while, I just built him a new no nonsense all-in-one board machine with a burner. Not the answer you were looking for but it worked in my case for what he used it for. All for just over $300.00

All she has to do is get the serial # off of it and then you can go to gateways site and it will break everything down for you....drivers, etc etc.

http://www.cnn.com/TECH/computing/9901/19/tophome.idg/ A thread speaking about the gateway.

Looks like a p2-450.

Adding a cd burner wont be a problem.

I would try to get her to give u the ser number..then go to gateways site and see if they have w2k drivers listed.

I woul try to check into why "w98 is not talking to kodak" though before I went to the trub of messing with w2k. W2k isnt the most user friendly os out there. Maybe she is just doing something a little wrong and its not working?

If you had lots of time to fool with it....it may take a slocket and allow you to upgrade to a nice 1g celeron or similar.

Kodak's site for pic uploads says W2K or better required.

I have a p6-200 P-Pro board from gateway, was used as web server for NASA. Hers must be p2-450 as JP says. If you have a bay free, a burner will work fine(mine's 16*10*40). I have twin 30 gig drives in it now. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. Guess I'm good to go.

Now all I have to do is convince her to let my 13 year old do it.

Interesting, I wonder how they figure WinME into the mix. With the zillions of HP Pavilions with ME that walmarts has sold to all those home consumer type users..youd think Kodak would want their business too. The sort of "retired grandma" user who wants to have pics of her grandkids etc.

ME is newer than W2k...interesting. Hard to believe they shut out the many thousands of 98 users.
