processor speed incorrect

I bought an Asus A7V8X-X motherboard and put my 1.2 GHz processor in and it registers as 900 MHz. I've tried new memory. I've changed and reset different settings in BIOS, but it either doesn't boot or I have to set speed at 900 MHz. The processor worked fine in my old motherboard (which went bad). I've updated to newest BIOS, tried to set FSB to 133 but system won't boot (reset to 100/33), cleared CMOS and reset. Any other suggestions?

Welcome to Techimo Jumby.

You say 100/33, that would be 3.3 Ghz.

Set the multiplyer to 12X and the FSB to 100 and that will give you 1200 Mhz.

What processor is it?

For most processors that are higher then 900 or so the multiplyer is locked.

More info is needed, but it seems that you have a FSB problems, what was your old mobo model.

Perhaps the pencil trick? to unlock them.

Keep in mind your Multiplier X your FSB = your frequency.

It all depends on the CPU and the FSB that the mobo provides.

If you provide a FSB that is too low then you will underclock your CPU, if its too high it will OC it and that might cause the freezup problems.

I think we need more info.

MY GOD Darthgary! I've been fighting with this for two weeks. Been to forum after forum, changing settings, e-mailing Asus tech supplort, all kinds of things. This did the trick. How simple! Many thanks. I was beginning to think, as did others, that the MB was bad. Thanks again.

Surely you mean 300 or so. :/

I've just installed a new A7V8X with Barton 2.5 but if I try to change the BIOS to more than 100 / 11x the machine would not boot. Following Darthgary's recomendation to use a pencil i've tried many differrent configurations but for no avail. The only combination the mobo seem to like is the 100 / 11x ???
When I open the Task Manager (xp style) it shows me that i'm using a 'Athlon XP 1.1 GHz' which is very disappointing...

Can someone please help :-(

Not familiar with that board, but try going to Advanced Chipset Features in the bios. At the bottom should be a menu selection for load "Performance" or Optimized" defaults, usually F7.

Do that, save and exit. Might reboot to 166 mhz, the rated speed of the Barton 2500.

If not, you are probably using PC 2100 ram, and will only boot to the rated speed of the ram.

You can manually configure the cpu/dram clock to 166/100, but you would need to read and understand the Voltage control in the Bios.

to run in sync with the processor, you need Pc 2700 (333 FSB) DDR ram.
