Ducting Mod

I've seen Thermaltake's Ducting mod in a few articles, and have heard some people had good results with it. I've also seen some people put fans on their chipset HS.

Has anyone combined the 2? Or done something similar?

On a similar note, is there anything that prevents you from putting an oversized HS on a chipset? (Other than the components around it, that is)

yo your last question, other than keeping the thing on there, and making sure there is clearance there is no reason you couldent put a bigger heat sink on your northbridge (I wouldent try puting an Alpha PAL 8045 or somthing on there though... an old socket 7 might fit)

All the duct setups I've seen only duct the air in, they don't duct it back out. I'm considering building a system that would work just like a water cooling system, except that air would be pumped in to cool the sinks, then pumped back outside the case so that the case stays cool along with the chips. Obviously there will be no radiator, I'll just draw in fresh cool air and exhaust the hot air out the top, probably using a single axial blower to run the whole thing. The cpu is my main interest, but eventually the chipset and graphics card could be integrated into the system just like a water setup. This has the by-product of keeping your case mostly free of dust

Hey guys,
Speaking of cooling(ghetto style) Ive just completed my dryer hose mod.

I have a window bout 6ft from the tower, allready had 120mm fans modded into the front and side of the case.

cut a board to fit the window, 120mm Hole in the center with a 120mm fan, ran the dryer hose(I modded it so that I can connect to the front or the side) Connected right now to the side, outside temp 33f............

Went from cpu: 43 Case: 25 to cpu: 38 case: 23 in 10 minutes.
Got it fixed where i can pop it right off when it gets too hot, which here in texas will probably be tommorow, probably be 85

I recently used an 80 mm ducting mod to intake air to a passive heat sink. The single fan cools both the cpu and onboard video to below 40C at idle.

I have a fan controller that turns on the side panel fan at 40C and a blowhole fan at 50C. Have to run a Sandra burn in for several cycles to get the processor about 50 C.

Here is a pic of my Shuttle mobo/ onboard dual VGA setup

Hey DallasDon...I know from personal experience that you can get MUCH better airflow from removing the circular area with the "punched out holes" they call finger guards. It will increase airflow and possibly reduce any noise level...

thx, JP. That is actually phase one, surprised at the cool temps. I plan on maybe usiing two duct mods, and opening up the area from the back. Aslo gonna experiment with a gasket to reduce viibration and noise.

So far I.m very please with my budget dual monitor netsurfer.

Here is a pictoral thread posted on another forum

An added bonis of JPMiller's suggestion is because the fans are moving more air, they will turn slower and be quieter.

So unless you have stupid people or kids playing near your computer, it is better to take off the finger guards?

Except for the cats, or dust. If you open your case a lot , dust can be handled by just periodically blowing it out.

One of our cats is called "Lefty" now.....
