before i buy an eMac.......

I was hoping someone could answer a question

I'm on a dell with Windows XP right now. Can I easily network them to share internet (cable modem) and my external hard drive? Would I have to buy anything extra to do it?

Perhaps you could clarify. What is an eMac? Is that like a modded e-Machine made to look like an iMac?

I came screaming into this thread to beat your head in for buying an emachine.

bah... emachines... now whats your question! No way you wouldn't have too. Both of those operating systems should see each other understand whats going on and automatically config. I'm sure you could share the external HD under XP but i'm nto sure for OS X.. but yea

Yes you can share your routed connection, Macs can read Windows formatted discs (as always) so you can also share files on your external hdd...

Yes, you can see windows shares from a Mac. OSX makes it pretty easy to connect. You should buy a router/firewall to share the cable modem though. Prices seemed to have dropped some on the 4 port routers. Once you get that and the PC and Mac connected to it, each computer should not have much trouble seeing the other.

Before you buy your eMac, wait for OSX 10.3 to come out, which should be today. there are alot of improvements in 10.3 (Jaguar) over 10.2 (Panther).

Wow, $800 for a very decent looking machine. Maybe Apple is on to something.
