can't renew ip address, need help.
[I]i am trying to network a 433 P3 on xp and a 2.2 dell P4 on xp.
i have installed cards, drivers, and both computers say connected, not missing cables or unplugged. the 2.2 shows packets sent and recieved, but i can't accessthe other machine from it. the 433 only shows items sent. i went to command screen, did the ipconfig/release, renew, purge, register, view, set adapter, all of the things that i know to do, and it has a 169.254 ip, and says that dhcpis missing. what in the world is a dhcp.
anyways, i appreciate your help.

dhcp=dynamic host configuration protocol. it's responsible for distributing ips, dns servers, gateways - and can be reponsible for 25 other things to distribute.
You can't 'renew' an ip address that is not distributed via dhcp. 169.254.x.y address is distributed via automatic private ip addressing, and is not renewable.
Your both computers need to have ip address of 169.254.x.y and subnet mask of 255.255.0.0 for the connection to work.

sounds like you may have a bad network cable or else a bad NIC in the 433 PIII machine.

Do you have a router or anything in there or a hub? Or how are the machines hooked together? Are you using a crossover cable?
What is the IP address of the xp machine?
On the P3 machine..if you go to the command prompt and type in ping 127.0.0.1 what do you get??

Welcome to techimo. this is a common thing that you have a bogus ip address. shut down the p.c., then leave the cable modem unplugged for about a minute or 2.
power on the modem, wait for all lights, THEN power on the pc. see if you get a valid address. you might have to do this in addition with " ipconfig /release then ipconfig /renew" a few times but it should work.

| if hes not using a router and he needs internet, i believe setting it to static will not give him web access anymore. someone correct me if im wrong.

i had this problem as well and seeked the advice of a firend who already had a network. he said to try a HUB as XP is known for not likeing crossover networks. i tried a hub and it all worked YAY. or it could be that one of your NIC's isn't crossover compatable
let us know howyou do?

There is no reason why XP "doesn't like" a cross over cable. Thats a bunch of crap.
If he's not using a router, then one of his pc's will have to have two nics in it. One nic will act as the gateway and get assigned the public ip from his ISP the other will have a private ip. This nic connects to the other pc's nic. Set both of these to static ip's. This way XP won't be able to autoassign that 169 ip. If it still doesn't work like this then something else it wrong. But start here.

none of that worked. still stuck. called tech support for the nic card, they assured me it is installed correctly, and beyond that i am on my own.
