Systems PCI early VGA device ===AGONY!

This is a really tough problem that has stumped me for a week.

I have a 5K$ cooled CCD camera made by a company that went bankrupt in 99. I have the 16 bit software that came with the camera. It has an early generation PCI card interface w. no switches.

It is supposed to be detected by Windows 98 using the "Find new hardware" (running SE) as a "PCI early VGA device" . Then ironically you force WINDOWS to
install nothing (this is the manual's instructions). The software does the rest to run the unit.

When all goes well, you get an "?" entry in the Device Manager that says "PCI early VGA device" and there are a series of memory segments allocated to the card.

However now I cannot get WIN 98 SE to even detect the card with Find new hardware. If I try to install the adapter as a "?" type device (using unknown adapter setting, msdet.inf) I cannot allocate (or see) the memory associated with the card, and it does not function. ANY IDEAS? It runs in Safe mode.

Runs in safe mode? interesting.

I would try another slot, just to see if it will then be detected...

amd also, see if the bios has a choice for "plug and play os"..and whatever its set on..try the other setting, lol.

Just a couple of ideas JP

How many pci slots u got and how many other pci devices??

Maybe yank a few other devices just to see what happens...like pull the modem and soundcard and nic or whatevers there...to free up resources.

The unit is an old one (cause that is so far the only thing that really ran it). A Micron Millennia XKU with 220MH pent II.

It has about 4 PCI, and 2 ISA slots if I recall.

It worked for about a week (as a ? device, as specified), but now only in Safe mode.
Part of the problem is WIN98 detecting the device,
and the other is the driver.

WIN98 must load some sort of default generic driver but I do not know what it is....

Nate.
