Changeing sound plugs locks computer

Hello all,

I have abit of a problem with my sound card. When ever I disconnect my creative speakers and hook the sound card up to the receiver the computer totally locks up. It also happens when I change them back. I’m using a sound blaster Live 5.1.

Any ideas why this would happen?

Maybe some sort of grounding issue between the stereo and the computer? I unplug my speakers all the time and swap my rear channel to my laptop and back and never have any problems... Definitely the first time I've ever heard of that.

You're not 'Hot Plugging' them with the system still running are you?
Or in doing so are you having to switch back and forth between digital and analog? A little more info might help.

Yes I guess I am hot plugging, the system is on and running, not playing anything though.

And no I'm not changing between digital and analogue.

This has happened to me a time or two. It happens when I change from headphones to speakers by unplugging one and hotplugging the other. Of the two times it happened to me I missed the hole and I *think* I must have shorted out the card to the case when I did. I'm not sure if that makes sense or not but if the earphone jack goes smoothly in the proper hole without touching anything else I don't have this problem.

Yep the second time I tried to plug in the receiver I made sure not to touch the case or the back of the card with the plug.

I don't want to sound like grandpa, but...hot plugging anything more than a USB port could seriously shorten the life of your system. If you value your machine I'd limit this practice.
Good Luck wallie_x

You had the same problem hey. I guess there was no solution for it. Do you have a new sound card now?
