2 Maxtor Drives

I have 2 Maxtor drives. One is 30gb 7200 rpm (brand new not even out of the package) with warranty til 07/04.
2nd is 40gb 7200 (I used somewhere from a year to 2 years) with warranty til 12/04

My dilemma is a friend of mine just had his hard drive die and he needs another. Which one should I give him? I want him to get the better one. (What ever that is, I don't know) The other I'm just going to probably sell.

Thanks Droppyale. Just wanted to also mention that he had a 20gb drive and didn't even fill it to 10gb so GB's doesn't matter. I want to make sure he gets the more reliable choice.

well... they are both 7200 RPM...

so they are supposed to run a the same speed.

But usually the larger hard drive reads faster

With the word "give" taken into consideration, the 30GB is very generous of you.

Selling wise you'll probably only realize a few $'s difference on the 40 over the 30.

IMO

Ach. The 30GB is probably much faster. When was it manufactured?

Just because they have the same RPM rating doesn't make them supposed to have equal read speeds. Far from it. You're forgetting a few (lot of) things. Like the fact that a larger platter size (in GB's) has NO EFFECT WHATSOEVER on speeds. You think a 100GB Western Digital is slower than a 120GB WD? Think again. They're the same (unless one is a SE, and has 8MB cache..) Areal Density, however, has a HUGE impact on performance, and HDD's have been increasing in AD by ~30% anually. There's also cache size, and cache speed has some affect as well.

I can't guarantee you, but if the 30GB is newer, it's most likely faster.
