Wireless g

Wireless G - B compatability

Tall and short is I have a Linkys 802.11g router and a portege with built in 802.11b. I'm told the two are compatible, but I sure as sure cannot get the laptop to see the router even at 10 cm. Is this a common problem, what is the tech low down on the compatibility and is there anything I can do? All the articles I have found just say they are compatible without giving details. Any refs would be helpful.

Thanks in advance.

Yes the built in is 802.11b wifi compatible. It also works fine with my home 802.11b linksys wifi router. The work 802.11g router is set to mixed mode (at least that is what the guy in charge says, and what the printout of the setup page says). I'm not sure if the latest firmware is installed, but should that really matter?

do you have mac address filtering on?

WEp on?

what model of the router do you have?

Do you have SSID enabled?

I would suggest your install the firmware because the g wireless router is new and has alittle bugs here and there like any new hardware

OK. (don't tell anyone!) but I managed to get in to the router and it is indeed set to mixed mode, comunicating on channel 12 and SSID broadcast enabled.

Aha. I've reset it to channel 11, and it now works for me. For some reason the Toshiba card does not seem to stretch to that high a frequency.

Thanks for your comments.

For the benefit of searchers:
Note: if anyone has a Toshiba Portege 2010 wireless g problems (wireless b, 802.11b, 802.11g problems connecting, no signal, cannot see router) then it might be because the channel is set too high. I had this problem with a Linksys WRT54G wireless router.
