win xp reboot problem

I have been having an odd problem with my Windows XP machine. It will run fine for hours if being used but as soon as it is left for approximately 20 minutes it locks up with the error “IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL” and “STOP:7FFFFFFF 00000002 00000001 804DFEB0”.

It is a MSI KT3 Ultra ARU motherboard, Corsair 512M DDR, AthlonXP 2400+, WDC 60Gig 7200rpm, MSI NVidia GeForce4 Ti 4200, TDK DVD +- RW, Maxtor 40Gig 7200 rpm, Linksys 10/100 NIC in an Antec Sonata case with 350W power supply.

I suspect the HD since it will also lock up as soon as you try to defragment it. I have tried everything I can think of, diddled with all of the BIOS settings and checked all of the devices. I have SMART enabled and it says everything is okay, I also ran the WDC diagnostics and they checked out okay.

If I can’t figure it out soon I am going to see what some gasoline and a match will do to fix it.

What does your event viewer show? You can get very useful info from there most of the time...

Oh, btw, if you torch your machine can you take pics and post em up please?

the error that your getting is due to bad ram.

if you would run the memtest program it will tell you which stick is the bad one.

or if you have two or more, just pull them till the error goes away

actually the ram was tested and ran for over a year stable. i just changed the case and the hard disk recently ( and a new install of win xp for that new drive). other than that, the hardware is all tested, and known to be in good working order.

thanks for the idea

please forgive me for being insistant but that error is caused by bad ram
thats all I can say

changed my mind , I keep thinking about it.

pull the memeroy out of the sockets and clean the contacts and replace them, there may be some dirt or something giving the problem,
