Bluetooth hell and 64 bit laptops

I was browsing the latest issue of Laptop magazine in the local book store and two articles caught my eye.

They conducted a 'test' of various Bluetooth devices, adaptors and devices. I have to say that article made me lose some respect for the magazine. They only tested a limited number of devices, and to their defense, no one can expect them to test ALL availble devices and combinations. But what left me with a bad taste in my mouth was that the article left the impression that the devices they obtained were obtained from one source; so is it not possible that one source sent devices that are known to work well together? I'm still skeptical because messages abound about problems with Bluetooth devices, yet they gave it a rosey thumbs up. Makes you wonder who's behind their bankroll.

Not to leave the book store unhappy, I looked through another article/interview with AMD about their new 64bit processor and upcoming 64bit laptops. Being an early adopter/enthuiast, this monster is already on my 'I want' list. Although no hard specs were given, the benefits given were impressive. Better management of power, effectively the fastest '32 bit' processor available, positioning for upcoming 64bit applications, breaking the 4gb memory barrier, improved system BUS speeds. I'm waiting for the production model and some reviews before I get my hopes up too much. When they can introduce a 64bit laptop as small as my Libretto L5W...I'm there!!!

There is a company that makes 64 bit laptops. However their base price is 3k, and that price goes up as you try to add better hard drives, and better memory. The company is called Voodoo, and you can reach them at www.voodoopc.com. However they are used for gaming, and they are not very sleek design. The first computer company that will probably release a nice 64bit processor is going to be alienware (www.Alienware.com) however i have contacted them, and they say that they are still testing the product, and trying to see if it is worth the heavy price tag vs current technologies. So if your waiting for 64bit power house laptops through dell, or one of the other large companies, i hate to say that you won't for a while.

It's really just one of those things on my wish list. Between my Vaio NV190 (P4-1.7g), Libretto L5 (Crusoe @ 833mhz), and my iPaq 5555....I shouldn't need to upgrade for another two years or so.

At least at this time I don't think the 64bit laptops are worth the money. Granted, it will effectively become the fastest 32bit machine around; but there aren't alot of apps calling for the power or advantages of a 64bit machine....for the average consumer. If anything, I could see 64bit desktops taking off faster than laptops. So I wait.... By time they can produce a 64bit machine as small as the L5, I'd be done replaced it with a Sony TR or a Fujitsu T70/90.
